球磨機(jī)是一個(gè)圓形筒體，兩端有端蓋，端蓋連著軸頸支承在基座上。一端為進(jìn)料，另一端為出料。在出料端蓋裝有齒輪并連接傳動(dòng)裝置。筒體內(nèi)裝入一定量的適當(dāng)規(guī)格的研磨體（一般為鋼球或鋼段）和被磨物料，其加入量通常為筒體有效容積的25%～45%，當(dāng)電動(dòng)機(jī)通過齒輪帶動(dòng)筒體回轉(zhuǎn)時(shí)，磨內(nèi)鋼球和物料在磨擦力和離心力的作用下將被帶動(dòng)作相應(yīng)的弧形運(yùn)動(dòng)。當(dāng)磨機(jī)轉(zhuǎn)速達(dá)到一定的速度（即工作轉(zhuǎn)速）時(shí)，物料和鋼球的混合物將被帶到筒體的上部，在接近頂端的位置上，由上向下拋落或?yàn)a落，從而對(duì)下部物料進(jìn)行沖擊、研磨和輾碎。磨細(xì)的物料通過磨機(jī)出料端的格子板、揚(yáng)料板和軸頸內(nèi)的出料螺旋卸入出料罩的圓筒篩內(nèi)過篩卸出。
球磨機(jī)按筒體長(zhǎng)度分為短筒、長(zhǎng)筒、管磨和錐形等多種；按內(nèi)部結(jié)構(gòu)分為單倉(cāng)和多倉(cāng)；按傳動(dòng)方式分為周邊傳動(dòng)和中心傳動(dòng)；按排料方式分為溢流排料和格子排料等多種形式。粉煤灰加氣混凝土廠多使用單倉(cāng)（或兩倉(cāng)）管磨機(jī)，這種磨機(jī)適用于入料粒徑較小、硬度不大、出料細(xì)度要求較高的物料，非常適合加氣混凝土的物料特點(diǎn)。
由于球磨機(jī)在磨細(xì)過程中有混合作用，可將石灰和石膏混合磨細(xì)，運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)可靠，維修工作量小，物料磨細(xì)度符合加氣混凝土生產(chǎn)的需要，成為首先的磨細(xì)設(shè)備。
